Essay 1-ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
Environmental Control
Growing up in different environments can affect people in many different ways, even things as simple as how you speak and think. If you were to compare two people raised in the North to those raised in the South, you would see loads of differences. When saying this, it doesn't mean that anyone was raised incorrectly, but what and who you surround yourself with plays a significant role in who you would be. Think about you and someone born and raised in the cold streets of New York City. They have a different culture where they are from, and it is apparent based on the way one would act. The cultural environment can control an entire group's ability to attain, build vocabulary, and develop a mindset.
Do you feel like your life goals would be different if you were raised somewhere else? Growing up in the suburban parts of Atlanta and being raised by two College Educated parents, they will make it their business to give the same opportunity to their child. A parent isn't going to want less for their child, so it's expected for that child to also go to college and build success for them and their children as well. Now let's think about someone who was raised into a different lifestyle; look back at "Letter to My Niece" by Ariel Felton. Her main goal at that time in her life was to act like someone different from her sister based on the environment that she was surrounded by. Growing up, she was so used to her sister getting punished because of how she acted, and Ariel did not want that for herself. The environment that she was surrounded in changed her into someone new.
According to "The Upshot," an economic view article in The New York Times, "Growing Up in a Bad Neighborhood Does More Harm Than We Thought." The report states, "The negative effects of a bad neighborhood may be much larger for low-income families with less motivated parents." Being a child brought up in that type of setting will either make you or break you. The ones who want to get out of the bad neighborhoods usually get caught up in doing an illegal activity to support themselves, but how could you blame them? You put these children in positions to not be able to make way for themselves. The environment you were brought up in plays a significant role in your success as an adult.
Being raised in Atlanta and attending college in Savannah, you hear so many different accents. You will run into people who are from the deeper parts of Georgia, like Ocilla, Thompson, Dublin, and Macon. They usually tend to have more of a southern accent, but they even act differently as well. An individual from Dublin works totally different than someone from Atlanta. There is even Southern Hospitality about the people that come from Dublin. Now imagine meeting someone further up North. They have other slang and even different mannerisms. People usually say that people up North don't have the hospitality that we have down South. In the end, A change in the environment can change not only the way you speak but the way you act.
Growing up in different environments can affect you full circle. It can affect the way you talk, think, and even your ability to attain. There has always been a saying for years that says, "It's not about what you know; it's about who you know." Keeping yourself around positive things and your head straight will always keep you on the correct path to success.

Reflection
When I first started writing the expository essay for ENGL 1101, I expected to not really know what I was doing and not have a clear understanding of the assignment. When I first started this class in general I never knew how to correctly write a paper. My experiences during this writing process have been interesting. At one point I caught myself just looking at the computer screen for a fairly long time not knowing what to write. Once I started typing I got the hold of it.Now I think positively about reading and writing. I learned more about the audience with expository essays. How you should be able to talk to your audience and how they would view it. You have to change the way you address the audience when you are dealing with different people.
In the future, I can apply what I learn to switch up my writing styles and how to write to different people in different situations. I have learned to write professionally for an academic audience.I learned how to really clean up my writing. The teacher provided so many wonderful resources to make sure the writing is up to par. I learned this by listening in class and applying them to real life. In the future, I can apply it to my career field. I plan to work in the education field so being able to properly write is very important. Not only to be able to effectively help the students, but also when it comes to communicating with colleagues and parents.
